Does Pinterest Even Store Real GIF Files?
Often, no, not the way you'd expect. When a GIF gets uploaded to Pinterest, the platform frequently re-encodes it into a looping video file rather than keeping it as a true animated .gif. Visually it still loops like a GIF on the site, but technically it's closer to a short muted video. That matters here because it changes what "downloading a Pinterest GIF" actually means for a given pin, and it's why the honest answer is "it depends on the pin."
What FastVidl Supports Today
| What you're looking at | Downloadable via FastVidl? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| A pin that loops but was actually served by Pinterest as video | Sometimes, as MP4 | Paste the link into the Pinterest Video Downloader and try it. If Pinterest is serving a video file for that pin, it downloads like any other video pin. |
| A pin uploaded and stored as a true animated GIF | Not yet supported | We don't have dedicated GIF extraction yet. This is on our roadmap. |
| A regular video pin (not a GIF at all) | Yes, as MP4 | Use the Pinterest Video Downloader directly. |
We're not going to pretend GIF support is finished when it isn't. If a GIF-style pin doesn't download, that's expected behavior right now, not a bug you did something wrong to cause.
How to Check What a Specific Pin Actually Is
- Copy the pin's link. Tap the share icon in the app, or copy the URL from your browser's address bar.
- Paste it into the Pinterest Video Downloader. It's the same tool used for regular video pins.
- See what happens. If it returns an MP4, that GIF-looking pin was actually stored as video, and you're done. If it says the media isn't available, it's a true GIF or image pin, and the download won't work yet.
Open the Pinterest Video Downloader to run this check on your pin.
Saving a True Animated GIF From Pinterest Today
If a pin turns out to be a genuine animated GIF that FastVidl can't fetch yet, you have two honest workarounds, neither is as clean as a one-click download, but both work:
- Save it as a still image. Pinterest's own "Download image" option (press and hold on mobile, right-click on desktop) usually saves a single static frame rather than the animation, useful if you just need one frame, not the loop.
- Screen record it. Play the pin and record your screen, then trim and, if you want an actual .gif file, convert the clip with any screen-recording or GIF-conversion app. It's an extra step, but it captures the real animation.
When Will FastVidl Support Pinterest GIFs?
Native GIF handling, saving true animated pins as MP4, is on our roadmap. We're not attaching a date to it because we'd rather ship it once it's actually tested and reliable than promise a deadline we might miss. When it ships, we'll update this page and note it in our recent-updates log.
